Triage Your Marketing In Q4 Before You Plan For 2027
October 2, 2026 —
After 3 quarters, your marketing probably has a few symptoms worth examining — campaigns that haven't gained traction, follow-up that's slipped, and fixes that keep getting pushed to "next month".
Before you build your 2027 plan, take an honest look at what's working, what needs attention, and where a band-aid has become a permanent solution.
— ONE BIG IDEA —
Find the Gaps. Prioritize the Fixes.
You help clients review their financial lives, identify gaps, and decide what needs attention first. Your firm's marketing deserves that same care.
Do any of these marketing symptoms may sound familiar?
- Inconsistent follow-up — Interested prospects aren't getting a timely response or a clear next step
- Postponed fixes — Website updates and unfinished projects keep moving to next month and the next and the next...
- Unclear results — Campaigns are running, but nobody can say whether they're producing useful activity
- Recurring workarounds — Your team keeps applying band-aids to the same problems
Those gaps cost you opportunities, time, and money — and they can (and will) carry into 2027 if you don't address them.
Marketing triage starts with an honest diagnosis:
- What's working well enough to keep or expand?
- What needs immediate attention?
- What needs a lasting fix?
- What should you yourself stop doing and hand off to someone else?
A quiet pipeline might lead you to spend more on advertising, but if inquiries are going unanswered, more traffic will feed the same problem.
Use the start of Q4 to prioritize the most urgent gaps and begin the larger fixes your 2027 goals require.

5 Steps to Triage Your Marketing
Schedule a review with whoever handles your marketing. Bring this year's results, unfinished projects, and 2027 growth goals.
1. Check the Symptoms
Look beyond what you published or launched to what happened afterward.
- Which activities generated qualified conversations, appointments, or new clients?
- Where did prospects show interest but never take the next step?
- What results are you unable to track?
2. Diagnose the Cause
Pick the weak spots and look for the reason behind them. A campaign that ran inconsistently needs a different response than one you executed well with little interest.
- Are you reaching the right people with a relevant message?
- Is the offer clear, with an easy next step?
- Is follow-up happening consistently?
- Does the person responsible have enough time and support?
3. Stop the Bleeding
Address the gaps costing you opportunities right now.
- Test your contact forms and scheduling links
- Respond to outstanding inquiries
- Follow up with interested prospects from recent events or webinars
- Assign an owner to any leads sitting unattended
4. Look Beyond the Band-Aid
Identify recurring problems and the work you've postponed. Decide what each needs to get resolved.
- Replace improvised follow-up with a repeatable process
- Give recurring content a realistic schedule and a clear owner
- Scope overdue website or technology fixes
- Decide whether stalled projects still deserve your time and budget
5. Set the Treatment Plan
Choose your top 3 priorities based on their impact and urgency. Include any larger fixes you need to begin now to support your 2027 goals. For each priority, document:
- The specific action needed
- The person responsible
- A realistic deadline
- The budget or support required
- How you'll know it's working

Give Your Email Marketing Some Attention
I'm a big believer in email automation and prospect nurturing. When someone downloads a guide or attends a webinar, relevant follow-up keeps the conversation going without relying on your team to remember every touchpoint.
The 2026 Kitces Marketing Study recognizes drip marketing as a supporting tactic that strengthens other marketing efforts. However, if prospects show interest but never take the next step, check your follow-up.
If your Q4 triage reveals gaps here, this is worth a look:
- GURU Email Marketing Conference
- November 12–13 | Virtual | Free
- Sessions on marketing automation, creating newsletters faster with AI, and planning your 2027 email strategy
Share it with whoever handles your firm's email marketing, and choose sessions around the problems you want to fix.
— ONE NEXT STEP —
Bring in the Right Expertise
You don't have to diagnose and treat every marketing issue yourself. A fractional CMO can serve as your general practitioner, looking at the whole picture and bringing in specialists where needed.
You can have an outsourced marketing team with senior leadership, without hiring everyone full-time. That could mean website, email automation, content, or advertising experts working together to:
- Diagnose what's holding your marketing back
- Prioritize the fixes that matter most
- Put a treatment plan into action
If your firm needs help triaging its marketing and preparing for 2027, let's have a conversation to see if we'd be a fit working together.
