Your Firm’s Marketing Is Setting Expectations. Are They the Right Ones?

October 9, 2026 —

Most RIA websites promise the same things, giving prospects little reason to choose one firm over another.

Specific marketing helps the right people recognize a fit and lets others bow out before a discovery call. Both outcomes save time.

— ONE BIG IDEA —

Give Prospects a Preview of the Relationship

RIA marketing often sells an exceptional relationship without showing people what that relationship involves. Prospects are left guessing about your personality, your process, and who they'll actually work with.

Help them picture it:

  • Let them hear you think: Founder videos and podcasts reveal how you explain decisions, what you believe, and your sense of humor
  • Make the team visible: Introduce the people behind the relationship, especially if the founder won't be their primary advisor
  • Explain how you work: Show your meeting cadence, communication approach, and what clients can expect between reviews
  • Make the next step clear: Explain what the first conversation covers and what happens afterward

You won't make everyone happy. Giving people an honest preview helps the right prospects move forward with expectations your firm can meet.

— ONE FRAMEWORK —

Show It. Set It. Deliver It.

Connect what your marketing promises to what clients experience.

  • Show it: Use your people, conversations, and compliance-reviewed examples to make your approach tangible before prospects book.
  • Set it: Explain who handles what, when you'll communicate, and what you need from clients to do your job well.
  • Deliver it: Build a process your team can consistently deliver, then add thoughtful touches—anticipating a question, remembering a family milestone, or simplifying a difficult task.

"Underpromise and overdeliver" shouldn't mean underselling your value. Make commitments you can keep, with room to do more.

Wow moments work best when the basics already work. A thoughtful gift won't fix confusing onboarding or unanswered emails.

— ONE RESOURCE —

A 60-Second "What to Expect" Video

Record a short video answering the questions prospects may hesitate to ask:

  • Who will I meet with?
  • What will we discuss?
  • Should I bring or prepare anything?
  • Will I be asked to make a decision that day?
  • What happens if we both want to move forward?

Use the person who leads those meetings, speaking naturally. Place the video beside your scheduling link and in the confirmation email so expectations are clear before the conversation begins.

— ONE NEXT STEP —

Follow One Promise Through Your Prospect Journey

Choose 1 claim on your homepage, then trace what happens when someone acts on it.

If you promise personal attention:

  • Does your scheduling page explain who they'll meet?
  • Does the confirmation help them prepare?
  • Does your follow-up reflect what they shared?
  • Is the next step clear without them having to ask?

Fix the first gap you find. Every interaction is a chance to demonstrate the service your marketing promises.

Need help putting this into practice?

I work with financial firms that need senior-level marketing leadership without hiring a full-time CMO and marketing team. If you're looking for help building the strategy, systems, and execution behind your growth, let's chat.

I’m currently working with only a select number of firms, including:

  • RIAs ranging from $50M to $5B+ in AUM
  • Multi-advisor teams and solo advisors
  • Firms actively working to move up-market and refine their positioning
  • Growth-focused teams building more consistent, right-fit pipelines

We intentionally keep the number of RIA firms supported low so we can stay fully-engaged as their growth partner.

If you’ve been considering expanding your marketing, NOW is a good time to connect.
